Leonard Mapfumo despairingly mourns South African Motswako rapper HHP
Jabulani Tsambo (1980 – 2018), better known by his stage name Hip Hop Pantsula, later shortened to HHP, was a South African Motswako rapper (Motswakorista) who performed in several languages, mostly in Setswana passed away last week.
Tsambo was discovered dead in his Johannesburg home on 24 October 2018. The tabloid Celeb Gossip South Africa reported that he had committed suicide in what was his fourth attempt following three in 2015. Tsambo revealed in a 2016 interview that he had been battling depression due to his faltering career. Leonard Mapfumo was saddened by his death and had this to say:
It is so sad to read about how Double HHP passed away. This is a representation what we artists have to endure people don't know the struggles that we go through. We are expected to constantly be “celebrities” and put on a face in public. However, many of us are in constant conflict with ourselves because so much is expected of us. Even if you’re having a bad day at home the world expects you to smile through your struggles. Our emotions are always shelved so we can give a piece of ourselves to the world and we have to deal with our problems when we get back into our homes. Sometimes you try to encourage yourself but you find that one person who will say something that will discourage you. Majority of us love what we doing and do it to entertain and make other lives better and try and put a smile on your face.
