OyOsMusic Festival team attends the Meet and Greet meeting with Arts Minister Hlongwane
On the 1st of November, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe organised an artist meet and greet meeting with Honourable Makosini Hlongwane, the recently appointed Recreation, Sports, Arts and Culture minister. Among the people who attended were two representatives from the OyOsMusic Festival team, Courage Chinokwetu and Fungai Chakara.
The meeting aimed at creating a dialogue around the issues affecting the artists in Zimbabwe and map ways of addressing them. The key arts sectors represented included music, theatre, dance, film and television, visual arts and literary arts among others. Some of the key challenges cutting across sectors which were raised include piracy, lack of appreciation and being taken seriously and lack of policies to support artists, which echo the key areas which the OyOsMusic Festival seeks to address. Speaking at the meeting, the minister Hlongwane, proffered steps in which the ministry will take to improve the situation of the artists. He noted that he will revisit the current anti-piracy legal framework then work on strengthening it. He also promised that government will facilitate training and capacity building on intellectual property and artists rights. OyOsMusic team representative Fungai Chakara, emphasised on the importance of utilising digital platforms in selling arts products, considering that times have changed and the global world has gone digital. She spoke about the work that OyOsMusic has been doing to curb piracy through its online digital platform of selling music.
As a way of concluding the meeting, the minister highlighted that his door is open for artists with ideas that can help change the sector.
